Rīgas satiksme announces market research to purchase 100 trolleybuses and 24 trams

To continue modernisation of public transport and implement the objectives set out in the medium-term strategy of Rīgas satiksme, the company is announcing a market research study on the purchase of new trolleybuses and trams. The plan is to investigate manufacturers’ capabilities to supply 24 trams and 100 trolleybuses.

Both trolleybuses and trams must be low-floor vehicles. Trams must have a capacity of at least 180 passengers and may be up to 42 meters long. Meanwhile, the trolleybus fleet is expected to be supplemented with 100 new units. These would be 50 trolleybuses (12 meters long, at least 70 passengers) and 50 trolleybuses with two or three sections (18 and 24 meters, minimum capacity 120 passengers).

The trolleybuses must also be able to run on traction batteries without a contact network, as well as use cameras and screens instead of side mirrors, similar to the latest electric buses. As part of the tram market research, two-way trams will also be evaluated, and their costs and operational capabilities will be compared with one-way models, whose driver’s cab and control panel are designed to operate in only one direction.

The aim of the market research is to obtain comprehensive information about the latest technological solutions and industry opportunities that are applicable to public transport in Riga. In its market research, Rīgas satiksme plans to identify available technical solutions, delivery times and schedules, as well as standard and extended warranty conditions for both the vehicles themselves and their subsystems.

Maintenance and repair options during the warranty period will be evaluated, including the customer’s authorisation for independent maintenance and spare parts delivery times. Special attention will also be paid to the expected life cycle (years/km) and costs of traction batteries.

Both projects are aimed at improving passenger comfort and operational safety, increasing technical maintenance efficiency and reducing downtime, as well as introducing a unified passenger information system and improving the interior design by using easier-to-clean and more durable materials.

During the market research, Rīgas satiksme will approach a wide range of potential suppliers, including international manufacturers both within and outside the European Union. The aim is to obtain accurate information about the minimum delivery volume, indicative costs, and possible delivery schedule in order to prepare high-quality procurement documentation.
